Life Beyond the Classroom
At BiG Heroes, learning and growth don’t stop at our doors. Through experiences in the community - from educational visits and job exploration to social, recreational, and cultural activities - our members build confidence, independence, and meaningful connections. These experiences create opportunities to practice real-world skills, explore interests, and engage with the broader community in ways that foster inclusion and belonging. Each experience reinforces what matters most: being present, being included, and being part of something bigger.
Social Connection & Joy
Connection happens when experiences are shared.
Community outings create opportunities for friendship, laughter, and belonging -
essential parts of a full and inclusive life.
Learning by Doing
Learning comes to life in the community.
Outings allow members to apply skills in real settings, reinforcing independence, curiosity, and personal growth.
Confidence in the Community
Belonging doesn’t stop at our doors.
These experiences help our members navigate the community with confidence, purpose, and pride.
Skill Building & Independence
Building independence through real-world experiences.
Our members explore workplaces, practice social skills, and gain exposure to career paths all while building confidence beyond the classroom.
Operation BiG Heroes 2.0
Operation BiG Heroes is a cadet program that was created by the Brownsville Border Patrol Station Border Community Liaison Team in collaboration with the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office of Luis V. Saenz and the City of Brownsville Police Department. Operation BiG Heroes is an educational outreach initiative that was created by the agencies to provide our community of young adults with disabilities an insight of law enforcement’s duties and responsibilities on a State and Federal level.
Learn More
The project consisted of presentations and demonstrations of Border Patrol and the City of Brownsville equipment such as ATVs, boats, K9 and weapons that are used daily by Agents and Police Officers to fulfill their duties. Cadets also learned about the State criminal justice system and its process. Along with duties of all involved such as Judges, Prosecutors, Defense Attorney’s, Investigators and Bailiffs.
All agencies involved are very pleased and proud to report that our second mission has been a successful one as more members have joined the team of cadets this time around. We will continue to support the mission and vision of BiG Heroes which is to provide educational opportunities to these young adults with disabilities so that they too can be validated as productive citizens of our community as they learn and grow with more knowledge of what our beautiful community is about.
